the sun blasts my eyes as we head west on rio bravo. one of burque’s best kept secrets awaits our arrival. el kookooee is scheduled to burn tonight.
as we enter rio bravo park, the bearded, blue, grim faced effigy stares to the north, awaiting his sentence. the sky takes on a smoky orange cast towards the mountains as the sun rests its eyes. a full moon climbs out of tijeras canyon to watch el kookooee’s last moments. dancers beat out their rhythmic steps as the air starts to cool. people are scrawling sundry fears on scraps of paper in the hopes that the embers of big k will carry said worries off to the heavens.
the fire dancers set him ablaze as they finish their hypnotic flittering. unlike zozobra, el kookooee sits stoically…silently accepting his fate. orange sparks spiral skyward into the cloudless night…into the infinite.
